From Osaka · Kyoto · Nara
Three day-trip routes — ending here for dinner.
Sakurai sits at the heart of Yamato, the cradle of ancient Japan. Most temple visits naturally end around 16:00–17:00 — and Sakura opens at 17:00. The timing isn't coincidence; it's how locals have lived for centuries. Pick a route, walk the day, finish with charcoal yakiniku.
Peony Temple & Charcoal Yakiniku
Why this route
Hasedera Temple's 7,000 peonies bloom from late April to early May — one of Japan's most spectacular flower viewings, yet rarely crowded with foreign visitors (most flock to Kyoto's cherry blossoms). Pair it with somen (cold noodles) at the birthplace of the dish, then end with charcoal yakiniku at Sakura.
09:00
Depart Osaka (or 09:30 Kyoto)
Take the Kintetsu Osaka Line from Osaka-Uehommachi, or transfer at Yamato-Yagi from Kyoto Line. Reserve seats on a Limited Express (¥520 extra) — far more comfortable.
10:30
Hasedera Station → Hasedera Temple
15-min walk uphill from station. Tip: 7,000 peonies bloom from late April to early May. The 399-step covered staircase ("nobori-roka") is famous on its own — bring water.
13:00
Lunch · Miwa Somen
Take the train to Miwa Station (15 min). Try cold somen at Morisho or Sennichi — Miwa is the birthplace of somen noodles, going back 1,200 years. Budget ¥1,200–1,800.
14:30
Omiwa Shrine
5-min walk from Miwa Station. Japan's oldest Shinto shrine — there's no main hall because the mountain itself (Mt. Miwa) is the deity. Quiet, ancient, deeply atmospheric. Allow 90 min.
16:30
Train to Sakurai Station
2 stops on the JR Sakurai Line (5 min) or 3 stops on the Kintetsu Line. Sakurai Station South Exit, then 3 min walk.
17:00
Dinner · Sakura
Charcoal-grilled Kuroge Wagyu, signature thick tongue (¥1,680), and house-made tail soup. The recommended Sakura Course (from ¥7,700) includes 90-min all-you-can-drink (from 4 guests) — ideal after a long day on foot.

Foliage & Charcoal Yakiniku
Why this route
Tanzan Shrine's 13-tier wooden pagoda — the only one of its kind in the world — is surrounded by 3,000 maples that turn deep red from late October to mid-November. The drive up the mountain is a destination in itself. End with charcoal yakiniku to warm up after the crisp autumn air.
10:00
Depart Osaka (or 10:30 Kyoto)
Take Kintetsu to Sakurai Station (~50 min). At Sakurai, transfer to the local Tanzan Shrine bus (40 min, ¥510). Buses run roughly every 1–2 hours — check schedule.
12:30
Tanzan Shrine
Walk through cedar forest to the 13-tier wooden pagoda, the world's only surviving example. The maples (3,000 trees) reach peak color around mid-November. Allow 2 hours including the climb.
15:00
Bus back to Sakurai
Take the 15:00 or 15:30 bus (40 min). Important: the last bus from Tanzan to Sakurai is around 17:00 — confirm at the bus stop before going up.
16:00
Sakurai castle town walk
15-min walk through the old castle town. Stop at a dango (rice dumpling) shop near the station — the perfect autumn snack with hojicha tea.
17:00
Dinner · Sakura
3-min walk from Sakurai Station South Exit. Recommended for autumn: the Sakura Course with hot sake — the charcoal grill warms the room beautifully on cool evenings.
⚠️ Last bus alert. The bus from Tanzan Shrine back to Sakurai stops running around 17:00. If you miss it, taxi back is ~¥4,500 (30 min). Always check return times before heading up.

Kintetsu, 2 stops (15 min). Then 15-min walk uphill through the temple town.
